Katamari Damacy: Transposing a virtual game
into a real physical environment.

Digital | Moving Image | Digital to Analogue | 2011

Katamari Damacy is a series of video games published by Namco. The games concern a small alien prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations and planets which were accidentally destroyed by his father, the King of All Cosmos. The prince must collect objects by rolling into a magical ball called a Katamari around various locations. The ball allows anything smaller than it to stick to it and make it grow. Once enough objects have been collected, the grown ball becomes a star which cuts into the darkness of space.

The film-based final output was a translation of Katamari Damacy into a real, physical environment. It was filmed around various locations and used real life objects, ranging from thumbtacks to sweets. Papercrafts were substituted for the large objects such as buildings and animals.
